What this criterion means
At Level AAA, ordinary text needs at least 7:1 contrast and large text needs at least 4.5:1, subject to the stated exceptions. These stronger thresholds support readers who need greater contrast.
A practical example
An account balance passes AA at 5.1:1 but misses the enhanced target for ordinary text. Adjust the foreground or background until the unrounded measurement reaches 7:1 while preserving other visual states.
How to check it
- Identify the size and weight of each text style and whether an exception applies.
- Measure the actual text/background pair for default, interactive and error states.
- Record the exact ratios against the enhanced thresholds rather than reusing an AA-only report.
What can be missed
AAA contrast is not the same as dark mode, black-and-white styling or a high score from an automated scanner. Each applicable pair still needs measurement.
