WCAG 1.4.4: Resize Text

Published by whatisADA / Grow Wild Agency · Updated

What this criterion means

Text can be enlarged to 200 percent without losing content or functionality, apart from the specified exceptions for captions and images of text. The interface should accommodate enlarged labels and instructions.

A practical example

At doubled text size, a fixed-height registration button clips “Create account.” Let the button grow and allow adjacent fields to move so the action and its label remain usable.

How to check it

  1. Set up a representative page with text, navigation and form controls at the normal size.
  2. Increase text to 200 percent using a supported browser mechanism and inspect every important state.
  3. Complete the task and check for clipped labels, hidden errors, overlapping controls or content that becomes unreachable.

What can be missed

A visually larger screenshot alone is insufficient. Verify operation at the enlarged size, and test reflow separately because resizing text and avoiding two-dimensional scrolling address different barriers.

Record your test

Use this worksheet to record what you actually checked. Notes stay on this device when you choose Save; they are not sent to us. Avoid personal or confidential information on shared devices.

These are your observations, not automated results or a conformance certificate. A complete evaluation needs appropriate scope, supported technologies, all applicable criteria and relevant page states.
