WCAG 1.4.5: Images of Text
Published by whatisADA / Grow Wild Agency · Updated
What this criterion means
Use real text when the technology can provide the intended presentation. Images of text are allowed where the presentation is essential or the user can customize it to their requirements.
A practical example
A promotion stores its discount and expiry date inside a graphic. Rebuild those words as HTML over the background art so they can scale, change colors and be read without image interpretation.
How to check it
- Find promotional graphics, text banners and other images used mainly to display words.
- Determine whether the same presentation can be achieved with real text and CSS.
- For an exception, document the essential presentation or demonstrate the available text customization.
What can be missed
Alt text helps with non-text content but does not by itself resolve an avoidable image of text. Logos and screenshots that communicate more than their words need contextual evaluation.
Record your test

These are your observations, not automated results or a conformance certificate. A complete evaluation needs appropriate scope, supported technologies, all applicable criteria and relevant page states.
Primary sources and scope
