WCAG 2.5.1: Pointer Gestures

What this criterion means
Functions using multipoint or path-based gestures need a single-pointer alternative that does not require a path, unless the gesture is essential. This supports people who cannot reliably pinch, draw a gesture or use several fingers.
A practical example
A map uses pinch to zoom. Add separate Zoom in and Zoom out buttons that work with a single tap, and provide other controls for any additional gesture-only functions.
How to check it
- Inventory pinch, multi-finger, swipe-path and drawn-gesture interactions controlled by the page.
- Find a single-pointer action that performs the same function without requiring a particular path.
- Test the alternative on the actual touch interface and document any essential-gesture exception.
What can be missed
Keyboard operation alone does not establish a single-pointer alternative. Dragging has an additional WCAG 2.2 criterion and should be reviewed separately.
