WCAG 2.1.4: Character Key Shortcuts

What this criterion means
Character-only shortcuts must be switchable off, remappable to include a non-printable key, or active only while the relevant component has focus. This includes character sequences and printable characters entered with Shift or AltGr.
A practical example
A document viewer uses the letter D to delete a page anywhere on screen. Restrict the shortcut to the focused viewer, provide a setting to disable it, or require a modifier key that users can configure.
How to check it
- Find shortcuts based on printable characters, including sequences such as G then A and characters entered using Shift or AltGr.
- Test whether they act outside the intended component or during dictation and text entry.
- Verify a working off switch, supported remapping or focus-only activation for each affected shortcut.
What can be missed
A list of shortcuts does not solve accidental activation. Keep the settings reachable without relying on the very shortcut that a user needs to disable.
