Test WordPress Navigation Blocks and Menus

Published by whatisADA / Grow Wild Agency · Updated

Purpose and preparation

Review the rendered WordPress navigation at desktop and mobile widths. Record the active theme and whether the site uses a Navigation block, a classic menu or a plugin, because those implementations have different controls.

A practical example

A site has nested service links and a mobile navigation overlay with a separate close button.

How to check it

  1. Use the keyboard to reach the navigation, open submenus and follow a link. Check that ordinary destination links and expansion buttons have clear purposes.
  2. At a narrow viewport, open and close the navigation overlay. Verify focus placement, visible focus and a usable route back to page content.
  3. Inspect names, expanded states and the current-page indication with assistive technology. Retest after a theme or menu-plugin update.

What can be missed

A well-organized list in the editor does not establish keyboard behavior on the live theme. Hover-only submenus are especially easy to miss during authoring.

Record your test

Use this worksheet to record what you actually checked. Notes stay on this device when you choose Save; they are not sent to us. Avoid personal or confidential information on shared devices.

These are your observations, not automated results or a conformance certificate. A complete evaluation needs appropriate scope, supported technologies, all applicable criteria and relevant page states.

Primary sources and scope

This is independent implementation guidance with original examples. The linked standard contains the full definitions, exceptions and conformance requirements. A criterion or checklist alone does not establish legal applicability or whole-site conformance.
