Purpose and preparation
Review a fillable PDF through instructions, field entry, validation and saving. Use fictional data and the viewers users are expected to use. Check whether an HTML form would provide a more maintainable route for the same task.
A practical example
An intake PDF has checkboxes, a date field and a signature instruction spread across two pages.
How to check it
- Tab through the form and record field names, types and order. Check that instructions and required information are available without relying on visual placement.
- Enter test values, select options and trigger any supported validation. Verify that errors and format expectations can be understood with assistive technology.
- Save, close and reopen the completed test file. Confirm that values remain available and that submission or printing instructions are clear.
What can be missed
A visible text label does not necessarily become the field's accessible name. Support for validation and submission can differ substantially between PDF viewers.
