Purpose and preparation
Watch a complete representative media item with its captions enabled and compare the captions with the audio. Review names, numbers, speaker changes and meaningful sounds rather than relying only on the presence of a caption track.
A practical example
A training video explains a safety sequence while two speakers demonstrate different steps.
How to check it
- Check that captions are available from the player and can be enabled with the keyboard. Record the media version and caption language.
- Compare speech, speaker identification and meaningful non-speech audio with the captions. Note missing information, incorrect terms and timing that makes lines difficult to associate with the action.
- Review captions over busy visuals and during rapid exchanges. Confirm that essential on-screen information is not obscured and that corrected captions are published with the right media version.
What can be missed
Automatic captions can contain plausible-looking errors in technical terms or numbers. A transcript does not replace synchronized captions where captions are required.
