Review a Marketing or Service Email for Accessibility

Published by whatisADA / Grow Wild Agency · Updated

Purpose and preparation

Test the actual sent email in representative clients, including its text, links, images and reading order. Email rendering differs from a web page, so keep client and device details in the evidence. Use a test list rather than a live audience.

A practical example

A service notice contains a banner, an important deadline and a button linking to an account action.

How to check it

  1. Check that essential information is real text and that images have useful alternatives or are appropriately decorative. Review headings, link names and any layout tables in the rendered email.
  2. Read the test email with images disabled and with assistive technology. Verify that the message and primary action remain understandable in a sensible sequence.
  3. Review text enlargement, contrast and the destination page. Confirm that the test copy has no accidental live-recipient data and that the plain-text alternative is useful where provided.

What can be missed

An accessible web preview does not prove the email client preserves the same structure. Image-only promotional text can disappear when remote images are blocked.

Record your test

Use this worksheet to record what you actually checked. Notes stay on this device when you choose Save; they are not sent to us. Avoid personal or confidential information on shared devices.

These are your observations, not automated results or a conformance certificate. A complete evaluation needs appropriate scope, supported technologies, all applicable criteria and relevant page states.

Primary sources and scope

This is independent implementation guidance with original examples. The linked standard contains the full definitions, exceptions and conformance requirements. A criterion or checklist alone does not establish legal applicability or whole-site conformance.
