Prioritize Accessibility Issues by User Impact

Published by whatisADA / Grow Wild Agency · Updated

Purpose and preparation

Triage findings using a documented impact model and the importance of the affected task. Keep technical severity, business priority and conformance level separate. The result should explain repair order without pretending to predict lawsuits.

A practical example

A keyboard trap blocks checkout while a separate content page has a confusing but usable link label.

How to check it

  1. For each finding, record who is affected, the task consequence, frequency and whether a practical workaround exists. Identify blockers to essential processes.
  2. Group repeated instances by shared cause and owner. Prioritize repairs that remove the largest task barriers or fix a component used across many pages.
  3. Record the decision and any temporary alternative, then set a retest condition. Revisit priority when new evidence changes the impact or exposure.

What can be missed

WCAG Level A is not a universal severity label, and AAA does not mean a problem is unimportant. A numerical score should not hide the reasoning behind a decision.

Record your test

Use this worksheet to record what you actually checked. Notes stay on this device when you choose Save; they are not sent to us. Avoid personal or confidential information on shared devices.

These are your observations, not automated results or a conformance certificate. A complete evaluation needs appropriate scope, supported technologies, all applicable criteria and relevant page states.

Primary sources and scope

This is independent implementation guidance with original examples. The linked standard contains the full definitions, exceptions and conformance requirements. A criterion or checklist alone does not establish legal applicability or whole-site conformance.
