What this criterion means
At Level AA, pointer targets are generally at least 24 by 24 CSS pixels or satisfy a defined exception. For undersized targets, the spacing option uses centered 24-pixel circles and their relationship to neighboring targets.
A practical example
A row of small icon buttons is difficult to select precisely. Increase each button's interactive padding, or evaluate the exact spacing exception rather than assuming a small visual gap is sufficient.
How to check it
- Measure each target's bounding box in CSS pixels, including the interactive padding.
- For an undersized target relying on spacing, center a 24-pixel-diameter circle on its box and check for prohibited intersections.
- Document any equivalent-control, inline, browser-control or essential-presentation exception and test the responsive layout.
What can be missed
A 24-pixel gap is not the wording of the spacing rule. Avoid describing “legacy controls” as a general exception; evaluate the specific conditions in the standard.
