What this criterion means
At Level AAA, provide information showing where the user is within a set of pages. Breadcrumbs, a marked current section or another understandable location indicator can support orientation.
A practical example
A resource library displays “Resources → Forms → Error messages,” with the current page named in the breadcrumb. Its section navigation also identifies the current section without relying only on color.
How to check it
- Enter a deep page directly from a saved link or search result.
- Find information identifying its place within the surrounding page set.
- Follow the location links and confirm that their labels and hierarchy match the actual site structure.
What can be missed
A browser Back button describes navigation history, not necessarily the page's place in the site. Ensure that visually marked current states have an equivalent accessible indication.
