WCAG 1.2.1: Audio-only and Video-only (Prerecorded)

What this criterion means
For prerecorded media with only audio or only video, provide the information in another usable form. Audio-only material needs an equivalent text alternative; silent video needs a text alternative or an audio track describing its visual information.
A practical example
An audio interview includes two speakers and a door alarm relevant to the conversation. A useful transcript identifies the speakers and the alarm. A silent assembly demonstration can instead have a narrated version that explains each step.
How to check it
- Identify prerecorded audio-only and silent video assets, including embedded players.
- Locate the linked alternative and compare it with the whole recording, including important sounds, actions and sequence.
- Check that a visitor can find and use the alternative without first operating an inaccessible player.
What can be missed
A filename, episode summary or automatic transcript with uncorrected errors may omit essential information. Media clearly labeled as an alternative to existing text has a specific exception.
